The Power of Student-Led Learning: Exploring School Within a School (SWS)

School Within a School (SWS) has been a beacon of alternative education within Brookline High School (BHS) for over half a century.

On the fourth floor, SWS offers a unique learning environment for approximately 115 students, fostering a community built on responsibility, decision-making, and strong teacher-student relationships.

What sets SWS apart?

It’s the emphasis on student empowerment.

Here, students are encouraged to take ownership of their education, participating actively in shaping their learning experience.

The program’s foundation rests on self-governance principles, with decisions often made through the SWS Town Meeting, where students play a crucial role.

SWS isn’t about isolating students; it’s about providing a focused, supportive space within the larger BHS context.

Students in SWS take at least two dedicated SWS classes, including English, while participating in mainstream BHS courses.

This blend allows for a rich and varied educational experience, combining the benefits of a close-knit community with the resources of a comprehensive high school.

The program’s success is rooted in its commitment to building respectful relationships between students and teachers. These relationships are the cornerstone of the SWS experience, creating an environment where students feel supported, heard, and challenged to grow.

If you’re looking for an educational experience that goes beyond traditional models and empowers students to lead their own learning, SWS might be the perfect fit.
