What Is SWS?
School Within a School (SWS) has been a cornerstone of alternative education at Brookline High School for over half a century. Tucked away on the fourth floor of BHS, it offers a truly unique learning environment for approximately 115 students — one built on responsibility, self-governance, and meaningful teacher-student relationships.
What sets SWS apart is its emphasis on student empowerment. Students here are encouraged to take ownership of their education, actively shaping their own learning experience. Major decisions are often made through the SWS Town Meeting, where students have a real voice. It’s not about separating students from the larger BHS community — it’s about giving them a focused, supportive space within it.
Students in SWS take at least two dedicated SWS classes, including English, while continuing to participate in mainstream BHS courses. This balance offers the best of both worlds: the close-knit feel of a small community and the full resources of a comprehensive high school.
