Students in the Bridge Alliance program at BHS recently had the exciting opportunity to explore Salem, all thanks to a grant from the PTO. Yuki Nishizawa, Transition Specialist for the program, shared how this experience enriched the students’ learning and life skills.
The trip, which took place just before Halloween, began with a journey on the commuter rail. While the students are accustomed to using the MBTA locally, this adventure allowed them to navigate longer distances, expanding their understanding of public transportation and the community beyond Brookline.
The students practiced using Google Maps to plan their journey, researched lunch options, and managed their own budgets. Once they arrived in Salem, they applied these skills to navigate the area, making the most of their visit.
Reflecting on the experience, Yuki said, “Thank you, PTO, you are making a difference in their lives!”
This trip is a wonderful example of how PTO grants directly support meaningful, hands-on learning opportunities for BHS students.
